What can you expect on the day of the breast enlargement surgery? You need to understand every detail about this day from your surgeon. Here are a few things that may help you understand what to expect on the day of this cosmetic surgery to improve the shape and size of your breasts.
The surgery, which takes about one to two hours, is usually done under general anaesthesia; therefore, you may have to fast for a few hours before the operation. Your surgeon or a nurse will tell you about this beforehand.
The nurse at the cosmetic surgery clinic will check your heart rate and blood pressure. A sample of your urine may also be taken before the operation. Your surgeon may check the shape and size of your breasts and the position of your nipples and make notes about these details. He/she may also mark the site of the operation.
Your surgeon may also take photographs of your breasts before and after the breast enlargement surgery. The ‘before and after’ photographs may help you, and other patients of the surgeon, identify the improvement in appearance after the procedure is complete.
You need to wear light clothes, as per the surgeon’s instructions, for the procedure. You may also need to wear compression stockings for the procedure. These help in reducing the chances of blood clotting in the veins of your legs. Sometimes, anti-clotting medications may also be injected for the same purpose.
As the surgery is done under general anaesthesia, you would not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure. During the time when you are under the effects of anaesthesia, the surgeon makes the incisions, positions the breast implants and stitches up the site.
It is important that you rest for a considerable period after you wake up after the surgery. The anaesthesia may make you feel groggy and listless. If your surgeon recommends, you had better stay at the clinic overnight. However, this is often not necessary and you can go home on the same day.
Though you can go home on the day of the surgery itself, it is better not to task yourself in any way for at least the next 24 hours. Ask a family member or friend to drive you home and stay with you for this period.
The pain and discomfort you do not feel during the breast enlargement procedure comes back as the effects of the anaesthesia wears off. You need to ask your surgeon to prescribe pain medications for this phase. You may continue taking them if the pain subsists even after a few days.
The stitches at the site of operation are taken out after a week. However, if you have had dissolvable stitches, you may not need to worry. They would dissolve on their own within a few weeks, depending on their type.
It is necessary to wear a support bra or corset for a few days after the surgery. This ensures that the breast implants stay in their place. Your surgeon will tell you when to wear them and how to take care of them. It is important to follow the instructions of your surgeon in this regard to prevent any problems.
If your work does not involve any strenuous activities, you may return to it within two to three weeks. However, if your job involves such activities, you need to take more time off from work.
It is also a good idea to stay away from lifting anything heavy or exercising that involves your arms or chest. You need to keep in mind that you may take some time to return to certain activities. Your surgeon can give you an estimate of how long you should wait before you start to live and work like before.
